CDC Advises Vulnerable Groups to Limit Contact at Fairs Due to Bird Flu Risk

Avoid Direct Interactions with Poultry and Birds

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises vulnerable groups to limit contact with poultry and birds at fairs and other gatherings due to the ongoing bird flu outbreak. The strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that is currently circulating is highly contagious and can cause severe illness and death in birds.

Who is at Risk?

People who are at an increased risk of severe illness from bird flu include:

  • Children under five years old
  • People over 65 years old
  • Pregnant individuals
  • People with certain chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease or lung disease

These individuals should avoid direct contact with poultry and birds, including touching them, feeding them, or petting them. They should also avoid areas where birds congregate, such as poultry barns or pens.
