More than 150 Passengers Evacuated

Rescue Ships on the Way

A Liberian-registered cruise ship, the MS Explorer, has sunk after colliding with an iceberg in Antarctica. All 154 passengers and crew have been evacuated and are safe.

The ship was on a 12-day cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Antarctica. It was carrying 100 passengers and 54 crew members.

The collision occurred at around 9:30 a.m. local time (12:30 p.m. EST) on Saturday. The ship was about 100 miles from King George Island, Antarctica.

"The ship struck an iceberg and began to take on water," said a spokesperson for the Argentine Navy. "The passengers and crew were evacuated to lifeboats and taken to nearby ships."

Rescue ships are on the way to the scene. The passengers and crew are expected to be taken to Ushuaia, Argentina.
